New York’s Capital Region has enticed visitors for 400 years with historic sites, fabulous attractions, fun, family-friendly amenities, and exciting entertaining events. World-class museums, unique galleries, stunning architecture, gourmet restaurants, and welcoming accommodations are all within a short drive.

The Capital Region in upstate New York generally refers to the four counties surrounding Albany, the capital of the state: Albany County, Schenectady County, Rensselaer County, and Saratoga County. Often, especially for economic classification, the area includes the surrounding counties. In general the other counties of the Albany-Schenectady-Amsterdam Combined Statistical Area are included.

The Capital Region was first settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s and came under British control in 1664. Albany has been the permanent capital of the state of New York since 1797.

The Capital Region is notable for many historical and industrial events. The Battle of Saratoga and the Albany Plan of Union are two historical events from before American independence which are now considered of national and sometimes also of international importance. Many multinational corporations were founded in the Capital District including American Express, General Electric, American Locomotive Company, and International Paper.

Working in the Capital Region
With the recent birth of many high-tech companies-and the impending arrival of semiconductor titan International SEMATECH-America's newest Tech Valley is taking shape. That trend, combined with nearly 20,000 employers who already call this region home, makes the Capital Region a haven for career opportunities.
